The 10 numbers to know
- 89 of 100 Shopify stores now register WebMCP tools an AI agent can call in the browser (search the catalog, open a product, add to cart, go to checkout). 88 of them use exactly the 12 tools Shopify's own adapter provides; 1 adds tools of its own.Shopify sample, 26 Oct 2026 · summary · CSV

Can an AI agent buy? Cart and checkout
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Agent creates a real cart | 89% (944/1,065) | 79% (843/1,072) |
| Agent reaches a checkout URL | 89% (944/1,065) | 97% of carts (821/843) |
| Public catalog readable | 94% | 93% |
| Store search returns its own products | 95% | 56% |
| Median share of agent tasks passed | 79% | 57% |
Shopify: the 1,065 stores of the September study, rescanned 5 October 2026. WooCommerce: 1,413 stores scanned 30 September to 18 October 2026; shares use the stores where a check could run. The two samples were collected differently, so compare directions, not decimals.
Agent protocols: what stores publish for agents
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| WebMCP tools registered in the browser | 89% | not measured yet |
UCP profile (/.well-known/ucp) | 99% | 0% |
| Catalog MCP endpoint answers | 99% | n/a |
| Public Store API answers | n/a | 96% |
| llms.txt | 96% | 9% |
| agents.md | 96% | 0% |
| MCP server present (WordPress; needs a password, so it serves merchant tools, not shoppers) | n/a | 44% |
Shopify switches these on for every store, which is why its numbers are uniform. WooCommerce stores get whatever their plugins add, so most publish nothing written for agents. WebMCP on Shopify comes from a loader Shopify injects into the page; 95 of the 100 sampled stores carried it.
Product data agents can read
| Shopify | WooCommerce | |
|---|---|---|
| Product structured data with price and availability | 21% | 3% |
| Adequate descriptions on sampled products | 38% | 44% |
| Image alt text on sampled products | not public | 9% |
| Barcodes (GTIN) exposed publicly | 0% | not testable |
The plumbing mostly works; the data behind it does not. An agent that can build a cart still hedges when it cannot say what a product is made of, what it smells like or whether it is in stock.
Policies
45% of Shopify stores (478 of 1,065) and 10% of WooCommerce stores (145 of 1,413) have all four policy pages an agent looks for. Shopify's policy question tool answers on 98% of stores, but in our simulated shopping trips the most common gap was still "the policy tool returned no shipping time".
Agent identity
0 of 295 Shopify stores treat a request signed with Web Bot Auth (RFC 9421) differently from an anonymous one; 97% served the signed request and ignored the signature; 3% gate anonymous agents with no way for a legitimate one to identify itself. Read the identity study.
Agent payments
1,052 of 1,065 Shopify stores declare at least one UCP payment handler (Shopify's default). Beyond that the newer agent payment protocols are nearly absent: 1 store publishes an ACP discovery document, 2 declare AP2 mandates and 2 advertise MPP payment terms. A store that declares none of these loses no points. Read the payments study.

Method and sources
How we test. The AgentShoppable scanner runs the steps a shopping agent takes against a live storefront, with no store credentials: discover agent surfaces, read the catalog, search it, read products and policies, create a cart with a real variant, update it, remove it and get a checkout URL. Nothing is bought; no order or checkout session is opened. Requests carry our own User-Agent and, where noted, a published signature. WebMCP is measured by loading pages in headless Chromium with a collector that records each registered tool without calling it.
Samples. Shopify: 1,102 scans of 272 well-known brands and 830 Shop directory merchants (September 2026), rescanned as 1,065 stores on 5 October 2026, and every tenth of those for WebMCP on 26 October 2026. WooCommerce: 1,413 stores found through outreach discovery, mostly English-language sites in the Tranco top million that answer the WooCommerce Store API. Neither is a random sample of all stores. Where a check could not run on a store, it is left out of that share, not counted as a failure.
